Winona State baseball drops contest to Panthers

OZARK, Mo. - The Winona State University baseball team suffered its second consecutive loss to the Drury University Panthers on Saturday, falling 16-4.

Cooper Kapanke and Miller Wallace evenly split the four Warrior RBI in the game, with Kapanke knocking a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning to score two Warrior teammates, while Wallace drove in two more in the sixth in similar fashion. However, the WSU bats were quiet otherwise, as the Panther pitching corps limited Winona State to six hits overall.

The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and stretched their advantage to 5-0 after three.  The Warriors battled back in the top half of the fourth, scoring three times to cut the deficit to 5-3 midway through the contest.  Unfortunately, Drury scored four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings - and with a three-run seventh sandwiched in between - put the game out of reach.

Drury pitchers struck out 12 Winona State batters in the contest, with DU starter Cody Bahl accruing five of those in his six innings of work. Winona State had some success with the long ball against Bahl, as all three of the WSU doubles came against the Drury freshman.  Three different relievers took the hill in the last three innings of play for the Panthers, holding WSU hitless over that time.

Winona State's Cameron Kramer started the contest and went four innings, yielding five runs on five hits.  Kramer struck out three and walked three, facing 22 Panthers. Justin Firpo relieved Kramer and threw two and 2/3's innings, notching a strikeout and conceding seven runs, six which were earned. Zach Watzka and Charlie Stenson wrapped up the game for Winona State.

The Warriors will look for the third time to be the charm on Sunday, as WSU takes on Drury in their third and final contest. The nine-inning affair is set for noon at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo.
