WSU volleyball sweeps MSUM as Joe Getzin reaches 350 career wins

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University volleyball team earned their third straight sweep with a 3-0 victory over MSU Moorhead, and head coach Joe Getzin hit the 350-career win milestone after the WSU win this evening.

It was all Warriors during the match, as they did not trail at any point and saw the scoreboard tied just four times throughout the three sets.

The Warriors tallied 50 kills and collected 74 digs against the Dragons; both marks are season highs for three-set matches. WSU held MSUM below a .200 hitting percentage in each set as the Dragons hit just .129 for the match. Winona State hit .267 on the night, led by Sidney Paulson's 17 kills and .364 hitting percentage.

Paulson came out firing, connecting for kills on the first three points of the game and sparked a Warrior 5-0 run to open the match. WSU took the first set, 25-29, behind Paulson's impressive nine kills and Jaci Winchell's 16 assists in the opening frame.

Madison Larson and Taylor Pagel spearheaded the Warrior attack in the second set with five and four kills, respectively. Winona State's strong defense held MSU Moorhead to just 11 kills on 45 attempts in the second set, and WSU won the set 25-19.

The final set was no different, as the Warriors closed out the night with a 25-16 victory. WSU blocked four attacks by MSUM, while going 13 for 17 on side-outs.

Winchell and Paulson led the Warriors throughout the full rotation as they each recorded double doubles in the match. Paulson's 17 digs matched her 17 kills, while Winchell added 16 digs and 39 assists.

Casey Volkmann, Kylie Welch, and Anna Hennessy each totaled double-digit digs, while Larson poured in 10 kills on the attack.

The Warriors improved to 7-7 (3-4 NSIC) on the season and will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 30, for a 4:00pm match against Northern State.
