WINONA, Minn. -
Lauren Fech scored 22 points on a stellar night shooting the basketball, but Winona State was dealt a 66-54 setback against Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 28. Winona State was looking for their fifth-straight win against MSUM, including a 75-66 victory last year on Jan. 21 in Moorhead, but saw their winning streak over the Dragons halted at four.
Fech was 9-of-17 overall and 4-of-8 from 3-point territory, recording her second-best point tally of the season. However, MSUM scored 21 points in both the first and second quarters to build what would be an insurmountable lead to defeat WSU.
The Dragons saw Winona State open up an early lead as Fech and
Alex Dornfeld got on the board just minutes after tipoff, with Fech knocking down four 3-pointers and Dornfeld connecting on a pair of free throws to stake the Warriors a 16-8 advantage midway through the first quarter. However, MSUM chipped away at the WSU lead and the Dragons closed out the quarter leading the home team, 21-16. Minnesota State Moorhead would remain in control the rest of the way.
Fech was the only WSU player in double figures, with
Alex Dornfeld adding eight points and eight rebounds to the Warrior effort. Dornfeld was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
As a team, WSU was 20-of-64 (31.25%) from the floor, including a 7-of-31 (22.6%) mark from behind the arc. The Warriors converted on all seven of their free throw attempts, while the Dragons were 9-of-15 from the line.
Minnesota State Moorhead held a distinct rebounding advantage, 42-27, while the Warriors forced the Dragons into 10 turnovers. Fech,
Shea Dechant and
Mattie Schimenz each had two steals apiece.
MSUM saw two Dragons reach double-doubles: Mariah McKeever had 22 points and ten rebounds, while Peyton Boom scored 15 points and also hauled in ten boards.
With the setback, Winona State falls to 10-12 overall and 4-12 in NSIC play. Minnesota State Moorhead moves to 10-10 on the season and 7-9 in league action.
Winona State will be in action next when they host Augustana University on Friday, Feb. 3. The Warriors and Vikings will tip off at 7:30 pm in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.
