WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University gymnastics team opens their 2022-23 season with a pair of competitions on the road this weekend. Winona State will take part in the Best of Minnesota meet, hosted by the University of Minnesota, on Friday, January 6 and then will move into WIAC action on Sunday, Jan. 8, competing at Hamline University. Friday's event is set to start at 6 p.m. and Sunday's meet will begin at 3 p.m.
Last year, Winona State saw
Kennedy O'Connor win the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships vault competition, held in Ithaca, New York. O'Connor was one of three Warrior gymnasts to earn All-America honors following the 2022 campaign. Kaitlin West and
Bryce Stoltz joined O'Connor in receiving All-America notoriety.
In 2022, WSU finished fifth overall as a team in the WIAC gymnastics regular season standings and picked up a victory over Hamline on January 21, the first home meet for the Warriors under new coach Stephanie Geislinger.
At the Best of Minnesota competition on Friday, WSU will join fellow WIAC schools Gustavus Adolphus and Hamline in one of the premier early-season events in collegiate gymnastics. On Sunday, the Warriors will compete in a WIAC triangular against the host Pipers and Simpson College. Sunday's competition will mark the first-ever meeting between Winona State and Simpson, as the Storm added women's gymnastics in 2021.
In 2023, Winona State will host the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships, set for Saturday, March 25. On that day, the Warriors will welcome qualifying teams and individuals to campus in a showcase of the best that NCGA gymnastics programs have to offer.
