Winona State volleyball beats Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Winona State University volleyball team defeated Upper Iowa University 3-0 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 10. 

Playing in Dorman Gymnasium in Fayette, Winona State dispatched the Peacocks 25-14, 25-23 and 25-17 to move to 14-4 overall and remain 6-3 in NSIC play.

How It Happened

Winona State hit a blistering .484 in the first set to pace the victory.  WSU raced out to a 15-4 lead early on, putting Upper Iowa on the defensive from the outset. Gianna Vollrath, Lydia Lange and Taylor Pagel all had kills in a key five-point run by the Warriors midway through the frame. 

The home side battled back to make for a very competitive second set, but Winona State outlasted UIU, 25-23.  WSU took six of the final nine points to collect the key second stanza success. Taylor Pagel and Lydia Lange picked up the final kills for WSU to claim set two. 

A back-and-forth start to the third set eventually gave way to the Warriors through six-point and five-point run, respectively. Down by one at 15-14, WSU would take six straight points to own a 19-15 lead midway through the set. Then, with a four-point lead at 21-17, Winona State would take five straight for the 25-17 win. Jayda Berg and Gianna Vollrath combined to collect the final three points via the kill.

Taylor Pagel, Lydia Lange and Sidney Paulson had 10 kills apiece.

Beyond the Boxscore

Tuesday's tilt was the first matchup between the two schools since Upper Iowa left the NSIC for the GLVC. 

The Warrior win avenged a 3-1 loss to UIU in 2022 and ran WSU's record vs. Peacocks to 4-1 over the last five contests. 

The 3-0 victory was the fourth consecutive 3-0 sweep among WSU's 14 wins on the season.
