Winona State volleyball earns NSIC sweep on the road, beating Bemidji State 3-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Winona State University volleyball team defeated Bemidji State University to complete an NSIC weekend sweep, dealing the Beavers a 3-0 loss on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Winona State (16-5, 8-4 NSIC) quickly gained an advantage over Bemidji State (8-12, 5-7 NSIC), cruising to a three-set sweep. Combined with the WSU win over Minnesota Crookston on Friday, the Warriors complete an up-north NSIC sweep on the weekend.

How It Happened

Set one saw WSU set the tone for the afternoon, reeling off nine straight points before the home side could get on the board.  Winona State held leads of 13-3 and 22-15 throughout the opening stanza. Kenna Kornely and Sidney Paulson collected kills in the opening nine-point salvo for WSU. Sophia Armstrong had the final kill of the set in the 25-18 set one win. 

In the second set, Winona State fell behind 2-0 at the start but rebounded with a five-point run to stake a 5-2 lead.Both squads traded two-and-three point bursts until WSU broke open a 19-19 deadlock with a five-point streak to lead 23-19. A Kylie Welch service ace was among the final WSU points in the 25-22 WSU win. 

The third frame was tightly contested with neither team collecting more than three points at a stretch in any given time. WSU was able to open a slight advantage at 22-19 following a Paulson kill and Winona State's Gianna Vollrath would claim the final two Warrior points on back-to-back kills for the victory.

With the win, Winona State moves to 18-1 against Bemidji State, dating back to Sep. 25, 2009. 

Following other results from around the league, WSU moves into a two-way tie for fifth in the NSIC standings, sitting with Northern State at 8-4 in the league.
