St. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Winona State University women's basketball team fell to nationally-ranked Missouri Western 90-63 in the opening game of the 2023-23 Warrior season.
Mattie Schimenz led Winona State with 20 points, going 4-of-5 from 3-point territory and an impressive 8-of-9 overall from the floor. Schimenz also led WSU in rebounding (8) while
Olivia Gamoke added 15 points and five boards.
Emma Carpenter also hit double-digits, scoring 11 points on the night.
As a team, WSU was 25-of-60 (41.7%) from the field and hit 10-of-29 (34.5%) 3-pointer on the evening. The Warriors struggled at the foul line, going 3-of-12 (25.0%) against the Griffons. After outscoring MWSU 19-18 in the second quarter, WSU saw Missouri Western pull away in the second half with a 54-point final two frames.
Winona State (0-1, 0-0 NSIC) will face Southeastern Oklahoma State tomorrow night, Saturday, Nov. 11, at 5:15 p.m.
