Winona State drops contest at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Winona State University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a first quarter deficit in their Friday, Nov. 17, contest against Truman State University, falling 83-59 to the Bulldogs on the road in Kirksville, Mo. 

Truman State outscored Winona State 22-12 in the first quarter of play, and the Warriors were held at bay the rest of the way in the loss.

How it Happened

Winona State jumped out to a 7-3 lead behind a pair of buckets by Olivia Garmoke and a 3-pointer by Emma Carpenter, starting strong on the road in their third-consecutive away contest. 

Truman State would eventually move in front at 14-10 and would then score several points in short order, using a series of 3-pointers - including one with three seconds to play - to pull away in the opening stanza with a 22-12 advantage. 

In the second quarter, the home side would sink their first two shots of period, including a 3-pointer by Bailey Kliewer before WSU's Vivica Bretton hit a 3-pointer to stem the tide of Bulldog baskets. 

The back-and-forth pace of the second quarter saw Winona State hold their own against TSU, as the Bulldogs would own only a slight advantage in the second ten minutes of play, edging the Warriors by a 18-16 count. 

Halftime: Truman State 40, Winona State 28

The Bulldogs would return to their first quarter form when the teams emerged from the locker rooms; TSU would outscore WSU 21-15 in the third quarter to command a 61-43 lead after 30 minutes of play. In the third, WSU would go 0-for-6 from behind the arc and haul in just three rebounds, compared to 11 boards for the home side. 

In the fourth and final frame, WSU improved their efforts on the boards, out-rebounding Truman State 11-5 in the quarter. The Warriors would earn several second-chance opportunities, claiming five offensive rebounds in the period. However, the home team enjoyed a series of frequent and successful trips to the foul line, knocking down nine of ten free throws awarded in the fourth quarter. TSU would eventually outscore WSU 22-16 in the last period of play and salt away the game, 83-59. 

Beyond the Box Score: 
Winona State faced Truman State for just the second time in program history.. 
Friday's contest was the first home game for either team; both WSU and TSU had played on the road up to that point in the season. 
Both WSU and TSU faced off against NCAA Division I opponents in exhibition action to open 2023.
