How it Happened

Maryville jumped out to a 12-0 lead with a tough run right out of the gate. Ava Sergio put WSU on the board with a layup at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter, followed quickly with a 3-pointer from Lindsey Hahn

Alex Dornfeld completed the first quarter scoring for Winona State with a layup as the period wound down, setting the scoreboard at 17-11 in favor of the home side.

In the second quarter, Winona State would make an important run early on, with Ava Sergio and Emma Carpenter leading the way. Carpenter's 3-pointer at 7:15 in the stanza pulled WSU to within two points at 20-18. Dornfeld delivered a 3-pointer of her own just before the halfway point of the quarter, with Olivia Gamoke getting the Warrior assist on the play.

Maryville would score the final points of the first half, knocking down one of two free throws with three minutes left, followed by a jumper from Antoinnette Mussorici to give Maryville a six-point cushion at 27-21.

Halftime: Maryville 27, Winona State 21

After the break, Winona State put together another scoring burst, closing to within five points at 38-22. The WSU run was powered by back-to-back 3-pointers from Lindsey Hahn, with Warrior teammate Kaitlyn Schrimpf assisting both buckets.

A late triple by the Saint's Carsyn Fearday extended the Maryville advantage to 45-35 as time expired in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter found Winona State gaining the upper hand, as the Warriors tied the game at 47-47 when Sergio scored in the paint and then delivered the and-one free throw to complete a three-point play. After a brief MU comeback, Mattie Schimenz drew the two teams level again at 49-49 and then spotted the Warriors a one-point lead with a pair of made free throws.

Unfortunately for Winona State, Maryville would eventually climb back into the lead and hold the Warriors off with a run of successful trips to the free throw line in the final minute of play, dealing WSU a 62-52 loss.
