WINONA, Minn. – For the second consecutive evening, the Winona State women's tennis team made short work of an NSIC opponent, beating the University of Minnesota Crookston, 6-1 on Saturday, Feb. 18 in the Winona Tennis Center.
The Warriors add the win to their NSIC victory total, coming off a sweep of Bemidji State on Friday and rolled past the Golden Eagles easily on Saturday, sweeping doubles play and going 5-1 in singles action.
In doubles, Winona State claimed the doubles point with a sweep at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 slots. The Warriors claimed identical 6-1 doubles wins via the play of
Rachel Kelly and
Ally Burger at No. 2 doubles while
Miranda Daulong and
Maddie Moe won at No. 3.
Sara Anderson and
Beth Murman took the No. 1 doubles match up by a 6-3 scoreline.
In singles play,
Rachel Kelly opened up the Warrior scoring, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Warrior teammate
Miranda Daulong followed suit with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6, and then
Ally Burger clinched the victory at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph. Burger's win was followed shortly by Rachel Anderson who defeated her opponent at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 effort. Winona State's
Maddie Moe rebounded to beat her opponent at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Minnesota Crookston avoided the sweep in a No. 1 singles match that went down to the wire, with
Beth Murman falling to UMC's Madeleine Schneider, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-10.
Winona State (3-0 overall, 3-0 NSIC) will step out of conference play on Sunday, Feb. 26 in their next match, hosting NCAA Division I opponent Northern Illinois University. The Warriors and Huskies are set for a 4 p.m. start in the Winona Tennis Center.
