WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's tennis team honored their two seniors,
Beth Murman and
Rachel Kelly, while earning a 4-3 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University this afternoon.
The Warriors earned the doubles point after winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles over the Mustangs to go up 1-0 heading into singles play. Murman and
Sara Anderson won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles whileÂ
Maddie Moe and
Miranda Daulong teamed up for the 6-3 win at third singles.
The Winona State seniors then set the tone in singles play, winning at the top two positions in convincing fashion. Murman defeated SMSU's Courtenay Leonard 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kelly, playing at second singles, defeated Joana Reis Indio of SMSU 6-0, 6-2 to put the Warriors up 3-0 with four players still on the court.
The Mustangs earned a win at No. 3 singles, but freshman
Ally Burger clinched the team victory on Senior Day with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the six singles position. SMSU went on to take the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches to bring the final score 4-3 in favor of the Warriors.
Winona State is now 7-4 on the season and holds an impressive 4-1 conference record. The Warriors are on the road next weekend, playing at St. Cloud State on Friday, March 24 and at Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, March 25.
