Winona State baseball falls at UMSL

St. LOUIS - The Winona State University baseball team saw the University of Missouri St. Louis pull away in both ends of the Warrior - Tritons doubleheader on Saturday, March 4.

Due to weather conditions, the Winona State - UMSL series was moved to an all-turf field at Lindenwood University where UMSL parlayed a handful of big innings to sweep WSU 13-3 in game one and 10-5 in game two.

UMSL 13, Winona State 3

Winona State had battled back to within two at 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning but the host Tritons piled on the runs in the bottom of the same frame to pull away from the Warriors, beating WSU 13-3.

Offensively, WSU was led by Derek Baumgartner and Josh Gullickson, both of whom went 2-for-3 at the plate. Baumgartner and Dane Weiland delivered doubles in the game, while Cooper Kapanke joined Gullickson in notching an RBI against the Tritons. Both Kyle Yu and Austin Beyer stole bases looking to jump start the Warrior offense; Yu also reached after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning.

On the mound, WSU's Pierce Gritzmaker got the start and took the loss, giving up three runs while striking out two. Winona State used five pitchers overall, with the staff combining for five strikeouts in the game.

UMSL 10, Winona State 5

In game two against the Tritons, UMSL built an early lead over the Warriors, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Winona State answered with five runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings but was unable to completely close the gap in a 10-5 loss.

Playing in Lou Brock Stadium at Lindenwood University, Winona State's Ryland Wall was 3-for-4 at the plate and had a RBI. Steele Beatty and Derek Baumgartner added two hits each as the Warriors accumulated 11 hits overall.

Starting pitcher Peter Tveite gave way to Nathan Platter in the opening innings; Peyton Lee threw the final four frames as the staff conceded 10 runs, nine of which were earned.

Winona State moves to 0-6 on the season, while the Tritons improve to 6-8 on the year.  WSU and UMSL will complete their four-game series on Sunday, March 5 in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. in St. Louis.
