Winona State earns win at Concordia St. Paul; series set to resume Monday

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Winona State University baseball team took the opening contest of their series against Concordia St. Paul by a 17-13 scoreline, but will have to wait to until Monday to complete the series against the Golden Bears.

WSU and CSP saw game two suspended due to darkness at Barnes Field in St. Paul, and due to forecasted weather and field conditions over the weekend, will resume the games on Monday, April 17.

In the series opener, Justin Firpo earned the win as the WSU starting pitcher after throwing the first five innings of the Warrior win. Firpo struck out five and did not walk a Golden Bear en route to his third victory of the year.

The offensive slugfest was the third straight game in which Winona State reached double-digits in runs - and the second consecutive 17-run win - as Kyle Yu and Ryland Wall led the Warrior way with five hits apiece.

WSU enjoyed a three-run second inning and a six-run fourth frame to collect a large part of the Warrior scoring to hold off a late CSP rally.  The host Golden Bears scored five runs in their final at-bats but the barrage was not enough, allowing Winona State to emerge with the 17-13 win.

In addition to the impressive performances from Wall and Yu, Dane Weiland delivered his first home run of the season for Winona State and Carter Brinkman added a double as the only two WSU extra-base hits in the contest. Weiland led WSU in RBI in the game with five, while Yu, Wall, and Brinkman each added three runs batted in.

In addition to Firpo's game-winning outing, Nevin Wall and Boyd Skelley saw action on the hill for Winona State. As a staff, WSU allowed 13 runs overall - all earned - while striking out six and walking just one. As a team, WSU scored their 17 runs on 20 hits and committed two errors, while CSP scored 13 times on 18 hits and had three miscues in the field.

Game two on Friday was suspended due to darkness; the two team will resume play on Monday, April 17 at noon.
