FAYETTE, Iowa - The Winona State University baseball team dropped the third game of their three-game series at Upper Iowa University on Sunday, April 30, falling to the Peacocks 8-7 in extra innings.
The one-run game was decided in dramatic fashion, with Upper Iowa scoring the game-winning tally in the tenth after a single and wild pitch put UIU's Samuel Grushkin in scoring position, eventually scoring on a fielder's choice to deal WSU the 8-7 loss.
Winona State was led at the plate by
Payton Beyer, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game.
Cooper Kapanke also had a multi-hit outing, going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Overall, WSU collected 11 hits and stranded 11 runners in the contest.
On the mound,
Chandler Schmidt got the Warrior start and threw four full innings, striking out three and allowing three runs, only one of which was earned.
Cody Hundorf took over in the fifth and was tagged for three hits and three runs. After a brief appearance by
Davis Zeutzius,
Cole Stanchina closed out the contest, pitching the final two frames and was saddled with the loss. As a staff, Winona State conceded 11 hits, eight runs and struck out five Peacocks.
With the setback, Winona State moves to 20-24 overall, 16-13 in NSIC play. WSU will travel to Augustana University on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Vikings. The two teams will face off in Sioux Falls, S.D. at 3 p.m.
