FAYETTE, Iowa - The Winona State University women's soccer team evened it's 2023 record at 1-1, earning a 2-0 shutout win at Upper Iowa University on Sunday, Sept. 3.
A penalty kick opportunity in the first half and a quick-strike insurance goal just after halftime put Winona State in the drivers seat for much of the match, eventually claiming the victory. The match had been moved from noon to a 10:30am start time due to forecasted high temperatures.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Warriors opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the first half, when
Abigail Williams converted a penalty kick from the spot, beating Peacock goalkeeper Isabelle Wagner.
Winona State would carry the run of play in the remainder of the first half, outshooting host Upper Iowa 9-4 overall.
Less than one minute into the second half, Winona State's
Sarah Strating doubled the Warrior lead, scoring at the 45:57 mark of the final 45 minutes.
Winona State continued the offensive pressure in the second half, reeling off 13 shots, compared to just four for the home side. WSU would finish the game will 22 shots attempted, putting 12 on frame.
WSU held the edge in every offensive category, shots (22-9), shots on target (12-4) and corner kicks (5-2).

Winona State head coach
Jill Leibforth claimed the first win of the 2023 season, having been named the full-time head coach at WSU earlier this year.
Sunday's contest marked the first non-conference Winona State - Upper Iowa match in the history of the programs; UIU departed the NSIC at the conclusion of 2022-23 academic year.
With the win, WSU ran it's record vs. Upper Iowa to 13-5-1, dating back to Sept. 26, 2008. The victory was ninth shutout over UIU in that stretch.
