Winona State women's basketball falls to UMary on the road, 76-50

BISMARCK, N.D.- The Winona State University women's basketball team traveled to the University of Mary on Friday, Jan. 19, for the first of two games on the road in North Dakota.

Winona State (5-11, 4-7 NSIC) had Hailey Markworth collect ten points coming off the bench but the host Marauders stymied a second-quarter comeback effort with a high-scoring second half to pull away from the Warriors, 76-50.

How it Happened:  
Although the University of Mary jumped out to a 10-4 lead after five minutes of play, Hailey Markworth scored a layup to pull WSU back to within one point at 10-9 early on.

UMary would connect on three of the final four scores in the first quarter, owning a 20-11 lead after the first 10 minutes. 

In the second quarter, WSU went on a five-point run to close within four points, as Markworth delivered again, this time on a fastbreak layup after claiming the defensive rebound early in the scoring sequence. 

The Winona State comeback continued through the second stanza, as a Markworth make drew the team's level at 28-28. A late three-pointer by UMary's Megan Zander gave the hosts a 31-28 advantage at the break.

Although WSU carved into the in the second quarter, the University of Mary made a series of key plays to open the third period, opening a 41-28 lead before Markworth scored the first Warrior bucket of the second half at the 7:28 mark.  

Vivica Bretton would score moments later, following a Markworth steal but a long scoring drought in the remainder of the third quarter saw WSU down 56-36 after 30 minutes of play. 

In the fourth and final frame, UMary would extend their lead to 23 at the 8:30 mark, before back-to-back buckets by Emma Kilpatrick and an Alex Dornfeld jumper helped WSU close the gap to 61-44. 

Despite a long-range 3-pointer by Malia Nelson with 2:02 left to play, the Marauders would finish the game on a scoring spree, using a 10-3 run to finish out the game and claim the 76-50 win.

Team Stats Comparables: 
WSU was within two in terms of rebounds (33-31), but UMary nearly doubled the Warriors in steals (11-6). 
The Marauders managed 24 points off of Warrior turnovers. 
UMary knocked down 10-of-12 free throws, with WSU hitting two of the seven foul shots awarded.

Winona State (5-10, 4-6 NSIC) will face Minot State University on Saturday, January 20 at MSU. WSU will tip off at 3:30 pm in the battle against the Beavers.
