WINONA STATE VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN NSIC TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND

WAYNE, Neb. – The Winona State University volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by Wayne State College in the 2024 NSIC Volleyball Tournament First Round.
 
The sixth-seeded Warriors were unable to pull off the road upset against the third-seeded Wildcats, ending their season with an 18-12 record.
 
Set One:
The Warriors and Wildcats traded points early in the set but Wayne State went on a 14-1 run to take a commanding 19-6 lead. WSC held on for a 25-12 win in the first set. WSU held the Wildcats to just .179 hitting but had 12 hitting errors themselves and hit -.106.
 
Set Two:
Wayne State jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the second set and had four service aces on their first eight serves. The Warriors slowly crawled back into the set, but still trailed 24-19 giving WSC five set points. With Kenna Kornely serving, WSU scored six straight points and earned a set point but the Wildcats scored the last three points of the set to take a 2-0 match lead after winning the second 27-25.
 
Set Three:
With their backs against the wall, the Warriors found themselves in a deadlock tie at 14 apiece in the middle of the third set. The Wildcats then opened it up and took a 24-20 lead, but WSU forced a timeout after bringing it within two. Wayne State went on the win the next point and earn the sweep to advance to the NSIC Tournament Semifinals.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Kornely led WSU with 13 kills. Leah Mach had 12 kills and Sidney Paulson tallied 11.
  • Jaci Winchell collected 16 assists and Ashlyn Steding added 15 for the Warriors..
  • Kylie Welch and Paulson both had double-digit digs with Welch picking up 22 and Paulson grabbing 11.
  • Channatee Robles had 13 kills to lead the Wildcats and Taya Beller had six total blocks.
 
Winona State's season comes to a close after finishing sixth in the NSIC regular season with an 11-7 conference record and an 18-12 overall record.
