WINONA STATE EXTENDS WIN STREAK AGAINST UPPER IOWA

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team defeated Upper Iowa University, 82-69, to close out a three-game home stand and extend their win streak to four.
 
Coming out of the half up 46-30, the Warriors held the Peacocks to zero second-chance points in the second half to win by 13.
 
How it Happened:
 
Finishing the first quarter up by two points, the Warriors went 10-18 (55.56%) from the field, while the Peacocks went 8-12 (66.67%). The score at the end of the first quarter was Winona State 23, Upper Iowa 21.
 
Despite giving up seven fast break points in the first quarter, the Warriors held the Peacocks to just nine points scored in the second. A defensive rebound by Lydia Lakanen closed out the second quarter, and going into the half, the Warriors were winning 46-30.
 
Coming out of the half, Kayla Bohr scored with a layup on an assist from Ava Privet. Before the end of the third quarter, Hailey Markworth made two free throws to push the Warrior lead to 14. The score at the end of the third quarter was Winona State 62, Upper Iowa 48.
 
The Warriors began the scoring in the fourth quarter on a mid-range jump shot from Markworth. Markworth and Lindsey Hahn made a pair of free throws at the end of the quarter to close out the game. The score at the end of the fourth quarter was Winona State 82, Upper Iowa 69.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Leading the scoring for the Warriors was Markworth with 31 points on 12-17 (70.59%) from the field, and for the Peacocks, Bohr led the team in scoring with 22 points on 7-15 (46.67%) from the field.
  • Collecting the rebounds for Upper Iowa tonight was Helen Staley with 13 on the night, and for Winona State, Hahn led the team in rebounds with seven.
  • Finding her teammates tonight for the Warriors was Mattie Schimenz who recorded three assists on the night, and for the Peacocks, Mia Huberty led the team in assists with six.
  • Holding down the defensive end for Upper Iowa was Privet, recording two blocks and two steals, and for Winona State, Sadie Jarmolowicz led the team in blocks with one. Olivia Gamoke, Schimenz, Jarmolowicz, Vivica Bretton, and Hahn each recorded one steal in tonight's matchup.
Team Comparison:
  • The Warriors shot 30-58 (51.7%) from the field, while the Peacocks shot 25-64 (39.1%).
  • Upper Iowa shot 11-22 (50%) from the three-point line, while Winona State shot 8-21 (38.1%).
