SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team falls short against Concordia-St. Paul University, 78-48, in first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play of the season.
Coming out of the half down 54-20, the Warriors looked to make a push in the second half to cut into the scoring deficit but ultimately fell short in the end.
How it Happened:
Finishing the first quarter down by 22 points, the Warriors went 4-13 (30.77%) from the field, while the Golden Bears went 12-19 (63.16%). The score at the end of the first quarter was Winona State 10, Concordia-St. Paul 32.
Despite giving up nine fast break points in the first quarter, Winona State's defense only allowed two fast break points in the second quarter. A defensive rebound from Concordia-St. Paul's Leah Dengerud closed out the first half. Going into the half the Warriors were down 54-20.
Coming out of the first half,
Sadie Jarmolowicz started the scoring for the Warriors on a three-point attempt from an assist by
Vivica Bretton. A steal from
Mattie Schimenz and a defensive rebound from
Lindsey Hahn brought the third quarter to a close. The score at the end of the third was Concordia-St. Paul 67, Winona State 33.
The Golden Bears started the scoring in the final quarter with a three-point attempt from Lauren Wilson from an assist by Lydia Haack. Late in the game,
Emma Kilpatrick recorded a fast break jump shot and a block on the defensive side to help close the scoring deficit. Ultimately falling short, the final score at the end of the game was Concordia-St. Paul 78, Winona State 48.
Individual Leaders:
- Leading the team in scoring for the Warriors was Markworth with 17 points on 7-14 (50%) shooting from the field, and for the Golden Bears, Lindsey Becher led the team in scoring with 18 points on 7-12 (58.33%).
- Collecting the rebounds for Concordia-St. Paul was Megan Gamble, who led the team with 10, and for Winona State, Markworth also led the team in rebounds with eight.
- Dishing out the assists for the Warriors was Bretton who recorded three, and for the Golden Bears, Haack led the team in assists with 10.
- Holding down the defensive end for Concordia-St. Paul was Wilson and Becher who each recorded three blocks on the night, and for Winona State, Schimenz and Jarmolowicz who each recorded two steals on the night.
Team Comparison:
- The Warriors shot 19-63 (30.20%) from the field, while the Golden Bears shot 29-63 (46.0%).
- Concordia-St. Paul shot 10-27 (37.0%) from the three-point line, while Winona State shot 8-33 (24.2%).
- The Warriors went 2-4 (50%) from the free throw line, while the Golden Bears went 10-13 (76.9%).
- Concordia-St. Paul recorded a total of 47 rebounds, with 13 offensive and 34 defensive, while Winona State recorded a total of 34 rebounds, with 10 offensive and 24 defensive.
Winona State women's basketball will return to action on Sunday, December 1st, when they hit the road to face off against Michigan Tech at 2:00pm at the Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Michigan.
