WINONA STATE WINS FIRST GAME OF NSIC CONFERENCE WEEKEND

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team defeated the University of Sioux Falls 83-70.
 
The Warriors started the game off hot, shooting 10-13 (76.9%) from the three-point line in the first half. With the deficit being too much, Winona State was able to hold off Sioux Falls to increase their win total to six on the season.
 
How it Happened:
Winona State scored the first points of the contest on a three-point attempt from Vivica Bretton assisted by Olivia Gamoke. Pulling ahead by the end of the first quarter, the Warriors were up 30-13 with the help of an 11-15 (73.3%) shooting performance from the field and a perfect 5-5 (100%) from beyond the three-point line from the team.
 
Trading baskets back and forth during the second quarter, the Cougars put up 17 points on 4-13 (30.8%) shooting from the field, and the Warriors put up 31 points on 11-14 (78.6%). The score at the end of the second quarter was WSU 61, USF 30.
 
Coming out of the half, Sioux Falls recorded the first points of the half with a three-point attempt from Kami Wadsworth on an assist from Brecli Honner. The Cougars ended the third quarter on a layup from Alexis Rose. The score going into the fourth quarter was Winona State 78, Sioux Falls 55.
 
The Cougars got the scoring started in the final quarter of the game with a layup from Aby Phipps. Sioux Falls made a late push into the scoring deficit with a layup and free throws from Rose late in the final quarter. The score at the end of the fourth was WSU 83, USF 70.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Leading the Warriors in scoring was Mattie Schimenz with 17 points on 6-10 (60%) shooting from the field, and for the Cougars, Rose led the team in scoring with 22 points on 7-14 (50%) shooting from the field.
  • Landree Wilson and Wadsworth led Sioux Falls in rebounds each recording five, and for Winona State, Gamoke led the team in rebounds with seven.
  • Leading the Warriors in assists was Schimenz with seven, and for the Cougars, Ayla Brown led the team with two.
  • Brown and Rose led Sioux Falls in steals each recording two, and for Winona State, Gamoke led the team with one.
  • Holding down the paint for the Warriors was Sadie Jarmolowicz with one block, and for the Cougars, Honner recorded one.
