SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State women's basketball team defeats Augustana by 20 to get back into the win column.
Holding a seven-point lead coming out of the half, the Warriors were able to hold off the Vikings to push their win total to five on the season.
How it Happened:
Pulling ahead in the first quarter, the Warriors shot the ball well, going 7-12 (58.33%) from the field. The score at the end of the first quarter was Warriors 14, Vikings 9.
Looking to decrease the scoring deficit in the second quarter, the Vikings made a push going 5-16 (31.25%) from the field in the quarter. The score going into the half was Warriors 29, Vikings 22.
The Warriors started the second half by scoring first with a fastbreak layup from
Vivica Bretton on an assist from
Mattie Schimenz. A layup from Augustana's Brinlee McRae closed out the third quarter, bringing the score to WSU 49, AU 34.
Going into the final quarter of the game, the Warriors held the Vikings to 1-6 (16.67%) shooting from beyond the three-point line. Winona State ended the fourth quarter shooting 6-11 (54.55%) from the field and a perfect 3-3 (100%) from the free-throw line.
Individual Leaders:
- Leading the scoring for the Warriors was Olivia Gamoke with 20 points on 8-18 (44.44%) shooting from the field, and for the Vikings, Payton Hardy led the team with 14 points on 6-10 (60%).
- Lydia Lakanen and Megan Schuman led Winona State in rebounds, each recording seven, and for Augustana, Hardy, McRae, and Paige Grant each recorded four.
- Leading the team in assists for the Warriors was Hailey Markworth who recorded six, and for the Vikings, Hannah Burg led the team with three.
- Markworth and Lindsey Hahn led Winona State in steals, each recording one, and for Augustana, McRae led the team with three.
- Leading the team in blocks for the Warriors was Lakanen who recorded two, and for the Vikings, Hardy and Jordan Munson each led the team with one.
Team Comparison:
- The Warriors went 27-53 (50.9%) from the field while the Vikings shot 18-62 (29.0%).
- Augustana went 5-22 (22.7%) from beyond the three-point line while Winona State shot 6-24 (25.0%).
- Winona State went 5-7 (71.4%) from the free-throw line while Augustana shot 4-8 (50%).
- The Vikings recorded 29 total rebounds, with 12 offensive and 17 defensive, while the Warriors recorded 39 total rebounds, with eight offensive and 31 defensive.
Winona State will return to action on Saturday, December 7th, for the second matchup of the NSIC weekend to face off against Wayne State in Wayne, Neb. The tip-off for Saturday's contest is set for 3:30pm.
