WINONA STATE FALLS SHORT IN OVERTIME THRILLER

WAYNE, Neb. – The Winona State women's basketball team loses in close fashion in an overtime thriller to Wayne State 66-63.
 
Coming out of regulation tied at 56, the Warriors were not able to hold off the Wildcats scoring, bringing their loss total to four on the season.
 
How it Happened:
Wayne State scored the first two points of the game on a pair of made free throws from Kylah vanDonkersgoed. Pulling ahead by the end of the first quarter, Winona State was up 18-17 with the help of an 8-14 (57.14%) shooting performance from the team.
 
Trading baskets back and forth during the second quarter, the Wildcats put up eight points on 4-14 (28.57%) shooting from the field, and the Warriors put up seven points on 3-11 (27.27%). The score at the end of the half was tied at 25 points.
 
Coming out of the half Wayne State scored first on a layup from Meg Rietz assisted by vanDonkersgoed. Winona State ended the third quarter on a layup by Vivica Bretton assisted by Olivia Gamoke. The score going into the fourth quarter was WSU 43, WSC 37.
 
Going into the final quarter of the game both teams were looking to get an edge to pull off a victory. Back and forth the scoring went, Winona State late in the fourth had an opportunity to win but missed bringing the game into overtime.
 
Wayne State got the scoring started in overtime with a three-pointer from vanDonkersgoed assisted by Maya Fitzpatrick. Some clutch free throws from Bretton and a three-pointer from Gamoke brought the scoring deficit closer. Ultimately not being enough, Wayne State would go on to win in overtime 66-63.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Leading the Warriors in scoring was Bretton with 18 points on 8-19 (42.1%) from the field, and for the Wildcats, Carsyn Boswell led the team with 14 points on 6-9 (66.7%) shooting from the field.
  • vanDonkersgoed led Wayne State in rebounds with nine, and for Winona State, Hailey Markworth led the team with seven.
  • Leading the Warriors in assists was Markworth with three, and for the Wildcats, Fitzpatrick led the team with four.
  • Tate Norblade led Wayne State in steals with three steals, and for Winona State, Gamoke and Mattie Schimenz each recorded one steal.
  • Holding down the paint for the Warriors was Lydia Lakanen with two blocks, and for the Wildcats, Fitzpatrick recorded three.
Team Comparison:
  • Winona State went 26-61 (42.6%) from the field while Wayne State went 28-65 (43.1%).
  • The Wildcats went 3-16 (18.8%) from beyond the three-point line while the Warriors went 6-20 (30%).
  • Winona State went a perfect 5-5 (100%) from the free throw line while Wayne State went 7-10 (70%).
  • The Wildcats recorded a total of 40 rebounds, with 13 offensive and 27 defensive, while the Warriors recorded a total of 29 rebounds, with six offensive and 23 defensive. 
Winona State will return to action this coming weekend when they host the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, December 13th, and Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, December 14th. Friday's contest is set for 5:30pm, and Saturday's contest is set for 3:30pm.
