Winona State tennis moves to 2-0 with win over SCSU

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State women's tennis team moved to 2-0 on the 2024 season with a victory over St. Cloud State in the Winona Tennis Center on Friday, February 9. 

Winona State beat SCSU 4-3, with the WSU battling back from a deficit after doubles play to take the exciting Warrior win. 

The Warriors were dealt a setback in doubles play, although the WSU No. 1 doubles tandem of Sara Anderson and Skylar Gary won 6-1,  SCSU captured the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles contests, starting singles play with a 1-0 advantage.  

The St. Cloud State lead did not last long, with WSU's Clara Thoemke beating SCSU's Maria Molitor 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot to draw Winona State level at 1-1. Although the Huskies would win at No. 6 singles, Lainy Ristau and Sara Anderson picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, respectively.  Anderson won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 over Maria Paz Aoki and Ristau outlasted SCSU's Johana Brower 2-6, 6-0, (10-7). 

With Winona State leading 3-2, the Huskies tied the match again with a win at No. 5 singles. However, with the teams tied at 3-3, Winona State's Skylar Gary won a nail-biter over SCSU's Claudia Munoz Perez, 3-6, 6-2 (10-6), providing a dramatic backdrop to the NSIC victory. 

With the 4-3 win, Winona State moves to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in NSIC play. WSU will be in action next on Saturday,  February 17, taking on the University of Mary in Owatonna, Minnesota. The Warriors and Marauders are set for a 4pm start.
