Winona State softball goes 7-2 on spring trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Winona State University softball team earned a 7-2 record across a series of games played on the Warrior spring trip, as WSU turned in several impressive performances in Florida this past week.

Winona State (16-4, 0-0 NSIC) and head coach Greg Jones claimed at least one win during each day of competition at The Spring Games and earned a doubleheader sweep on the opening weekend.  WSU put an exclamation point on the final contest of the trip, shutting out Queens College 9-0 on Wednesday, March 6.

March 1: Winona State 11, University of Charleston 3  | WSU pulled away early with three-run innings in the first and second frames. March 1: Winona State 12, Goldey-Beacom College 9  |  The Warriors scored five runs in the top of the first inning, giving starting pitcher Jayda Berg strong run support early on. The Lightning responded with four runs in the middle innings of the contest and narrowed the Winona State advantage to 8-6 after five frames. A Carly Engelhardt home run with Kiley Slaats on base in the sixth inning pushed WSU back to a four-run lead, while Sam Keller and Anika Lange added RBI base hits in the seventh.  Haley Zembo and Skyler Calmes combined to pitch the final three innings, holding off a late GBC rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Izzy Howe earned the win with five and 1/3 innings of work, striking out seven and walking two. Jayda Berg faced six batters in the final stages of the contest, striking out five Penmen hitters.

March 2: Winona State 6, Notre Dame College 4  | WSU was matched up in a pitcher's duel for much of the Warriors' game against Notre Dame College, with a Sam Keller solo home run accounting for the only tally for either team in the first five innings. Things changed dramatically with one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth, as a Alyssa Woelfel hit a grand slam and Abbie Hlas singled in Ashlee Chantos moments later to push the scoreboard to 6-0 in favor of Winona State. NDC responded with their first run of the game in the bottom of the same frame and then scored three times in the bottom of the seventh before yielding to WSU.  Abby Smith earned the win for WSU in the circle, stretching the Warrior win streak in Florida to four straight.

March 3: Winona State 5, Edinboro 2  | Winona State beat Edinboro University 5-2 as Abbie Hlas, Carly Engelhardt and Teaghen Amwoza all added extra base hits to the Warrior effort with Engelhardt's 2-for-3 day leading the way.  Jayda Berg and Sklyer Calmes combined for seven innings of work, allowing just two earned runs in the game. The Fighting Scots would score one run in the bottom of the fourth to spoil the shutout bid and added a solo score in the sixth.  The scheduled Winona State - Mercyhurst game also slated for March 3 was postponed due to weather.

March 5: Winona State 6, California (Pa.) 4  | Winona State and Cal (Pa.) locked into a defensive struggle in the opening innings with neither team scoring across the first three frames. Izzy Howe threw the opening three innings for WSU before giving way to Jayda Berg in the fourth. Winona State held a three-run lead over CSR heading into the seventh inning but the Golden Knights rallied with two outs to take the lead. WSU would score one run in the bottom of the seventh and load the bases but the College of St. Rose would hang on for the win. UMSL responded in the third inning with a two-run homer to take the lead and complete the scoring. Winona State's pitching duo of Izzy Howe and Jayda Berg held Missouri-St. Louis to five hits overall, with Howe taking the loss in the contest.

March 6: Winona State 9, Queens (N.Y.) College 0  |  WSU rebounded on Wednesday to claim a 9-0 shutout victory of Queens College in the final game of the Winona State spring trip.  Abby Smith threw a two-hit gem and the Warrior's offense opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the third inning. Smith did not walk a batter and registered a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the six-frame game.  The Warrior - Knight match-up marked the first time the two schools have met on the softball diamond.

Winona State is next in action on March 15-17 when the Warriors travel to Pittsburg, Kansas, for a six-game non-conference slate.  WSU will open NSIC play on Saturday, March 23, hosting St. Cloud State University.
