Winona State baseball suffers setbacks to league-leading Augustana

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks at the hands of league-leading Augustana University on Saturday, with the Warriors falling to the Vikings by 13-6 and 5-2 scorelines.

Winona State scored early in game one and saw a strong Warrior pitching effort in game two but the Augustana offense proved to be timely in both contests to hold WSU at bay.

Game 1: Augustana 13, Winona State 6 | WSU enjoyed a strong start in game one, racing out to a 4-0 lead in the first frame. However, Augie would answer with three runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth frame to pull away from the Warriors. The Vikings would hold WSU to five hits in the game, with an Alex Berreth home run and Cole Fuecker double accounting for the only Warrior extra-base hit in the game.

WSU starter Peter Tveite went 3 and 1/3 innings before giving way to Theo Giedd on the Warrior mound. Boyd Skelley and Cole Stanchina saw middle-inning relief stints for WSU and Chandler Schmidt provided an impressive two-inning effort to close out the contest but the home side was unable to score any further. Overall, the Warrior staff allowed 17 hits and 13 runs in the 13-6 loss.

Game 2: Augustana 5, Winona State 2 | Winona State scored runs in the first and third innings but Augustana tallied two runs in back-to-back innings across the fourth and fifth frames to hold WSU off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

For Winona State, Connor Weed added a triple as a part of his 2-for-4 day at the plate, while Kyle Yu was 2-for-3 and collected two RBI. Yu added a sacrifice fly for WSU but Augustana racked up seven hits in the game to pull away for the victory.

Warrior starter Kole Hinrichsen went six innings for WSU and was saddled with the loss despite a strong outing. Drew Lingen and Mason Beltrand both saw action for Winona State.

Winona State (13-21, 10-14 NSIC) will look to rebound in game three against Augustana on Sunday, with the Warriors and Vikings set for noon start in the third and final game of the NSIC series.
