Warrior Game Day : Softball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team welcomes Southwest Minnesota State University in an NSIC doubleheader on Sunday, April 21 in the back half of a four-game Warrior home stand. WSU and SMSU will face off at 1 p.m. on Maynard Johnson Field.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES...  
The Warriors are 28-18 overall and 12-8 in the NSIC. 
  
Winona State fell to Augustana on Saturday, losing 11-1 and 11-8 to the league-leading Vikings. 

WSU earned a midweek split at Minnesota State, losing a tight contest 2-1 in the opener but shutting out the Mavericks 4-0 in the nightcap. 
 
Head coach Greg Jones reached the 950-win plateau recently against Minnesota State Moorhead. 
 
Abbie Hlas leads the Warriors in batting average (.403), walks (18), runs (40), and on-base percentage (.467)
  
Hlas broke Winona State Softball career doubles record earning her 66th double in the Goldey-Beacom game, previously held by Sarah Carlson with 62.   
  
Sam Keller leads Winona State in total at bats (162), is second in hits (64), tops in home runs (5), and slugging percentage (.580)

Both Keller and Hlas have 15 doubles and two triples this season. 
  
Kiley Slaats leads the team with stolen bases (15-for-17) is third in hits (55). 
  
Carly Engelhardt has collected 37 RBI's so far this season.   
 
In the circle, Izzy Howe holds an 11-6 record on the year, with Warrior teammate Abby Smith owning a 9-7 mark.   
  
Jayda Berg has made 21 pitching appearances, 16 of which were relief efforts. Berg threw a complete game shutout against the Mavericks this past week.
 
Smith leads the Warriors with 108.2 innings in the circle and has 48 strikeouts, Howe has collected 111 strikeouts over 106.0 innings.  
  
SMSU STORYLINES...
The Mustangs are 19-28 overall and 10-14 in the NISC. 

SMSU is coming off a split at Concordia, St. Pau, losing game one 13-3 but beating CSP 5-1 in game two. 

Head coach Bailey Bouman has been the head coach for the Mustangs for six years.

Jillian Noel leads the Mustangs in batting average (.343), hits (48), and on base percentage (.479). 

Jillian Noel and Emma Humpal both have two home runs for SMSU this year. 

Noal is the top Mustang in terms of doubles with 11. 

As a team, SMSU is 67-of-76 in stolen base attempts. Brynn Webber leads her team with 16-of-18 swipes.

In the circle, Karlie Miller has an ERA of 3.15 and a record of 11-15 over 162 innings pitched. Miller has 111 Ks this year.

Also in the circle, Morgan Otte has a 4.50 ERA with 123.2 innings pitched and a 8-11 record.

Winona State standout Abbie Hlas was named the 2024 NSIC Preseason WSU Player to Watch this season.  
 
Winona State pitcher Abby Smith was named the 2024 NSIC Preseason WSU Pitcher to Watch.   
 
Greg Jones earned career win 950 on March 30 in a 5-0 shutout of Minnesota State Moorhead. Only 50 NCAA softball coaches across all three levels have reached 1,000 wins.
