Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WARRIORS DEFEATED BY #19 MUSTANGS

MARSHALL, Minn. – Winona State women's basketball lost to No. 19 Southwest Minnesota State on the road, 76-54.

The Warriors held a lead heading into halftime and trailed by just two after the third quarter, but the Mustangs caught fire in the fourth to pull away and hand WSU the defeat.

How it Happened:
Southwest Minnesota State got out to a 10-2 lead and forced a WSU timeout at the 6:20 mark in the first quarter. The Warriors responded to the timeout by head coach Ana Wurtz and went on a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game. SMSU scored once more to tie things up at 12 apiece after the first.

Alternating runs by the Warriors and Mustangs put the score at 28-28 with just five seconds remaining in the first half. The five seconds were just enough for the Warriors as Mattie Schimenz took the pass, dribbled up the left side of the court, and then sank a deep three as time expired to give Winona State a 31-28 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, SMSU knocked down a three pointer on their first possession to tie it up once again. Teams traded buckets until WSU went on a short run to lead 42-39 with less than three minutes left in the quarter. The Mustangs answered back to take a 46-44 lead heading into the final frame.

Winona State had no answer for Southwest Minnesota State in the fourth quarter, as the Mustangs outscored WSU 30-10 and propelled to a 76-54 victory.
