WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University women's basketball team battled to the end against the University of Mary, dropping their contest 70-61 at home.
Despite trailing throughout the game, the Warriors mounted a late comeback, fueled by a pair of three-pointers from
Olivia Gamoke and a layup by
Stephanie Dasbach, pulling within four points with just over three minutes remaining. However, the Marauders held on to secure the victory.
How it Happened:
In a back-and-forth contest in the opening quarter the University of Mary would see a lead of as much as ten points, but the Warriors quickly rallied together going on an 8-0 run highlighted by two
Lindsey Hahn shots from beyond the arc, closing the gap to end the first frame. Quarter number two began and the Warriors were the first to strike with a
Hailey Markworth jumper. The battle would continue with both teams trading buckets with the Marauders extending the lead to as much as eight points. Right before the half would end,
Mattie Schimenz knocked down a jumper, cutting the UMary lead to three points at 35-32 as the halftime horn sounded.
UMary came out strong in the third quarter, with layups from Addison Rozell and Ryleigh Wacha pushing their lead to seven. The Marauders continued to capitalize on opportunities, building their advantage to as many as 16 points. A timely three-pointer from Gamoke cut the lead to 13 heading into the final period. Winona State opened the fourth quarter with a jumper from
Hailey Markworth, followed by two clutch three-pointers from Gamoke, bringing the Warriors within striking distance at eight points. Continuing to fight Gamoke knocked down yet another three cutting the lead to four points gaining momentum. The Marauders would end up knocking down a couple of shots and a pair of free throws securing the win 70-61.
