WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team swept today's doubleheader against NSIC opponent, Bemidji State University.
In the top of the seventh inning of the first contest, the Warriors scored two runs on hits from
Kyle Yu and
Ryland Wall to bring the score to WSU 12, BSU 0. With the Beavers unable to answer in their final at-bats, Winona State received a commanding victory. In the day's second contest, Bemidji State brought the lead within one when Chris Koscielniak scored from third off a passed ball. During BSU's final at-bat, WSU's catcher
Tyler Flis threw out the runner trying to steal second base to seal a 6-5 victory.
Game 1 | WSU 12, BSU 0
Winona State recorded the first run of the contest in the top of the third inning with a single from
Alex Berreth. In the top of the fifth inning, The Warriors added three runs to their lead with singles from
Jess Ondell and
Josh Gullickson. WSU took a commanding 10-0 lead after their bats got hot in the top of the sixth inning. Their six runs came from
Joshua Hawksford scoring off a wild pitch, singles from Ondell, Gullickson, and
Ben Hefel, and a Sacrifice Fly from Hawksford allowing Ondell to tag up and score from third. Following their dominant sixth inning, Winona State added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with singles from Yu and R. Wall. With Bemidji State unable to answer back in their final at-bats of the contest, the Warriors took home the dominant 12-0 victory.
Game 2 | WSU 6, BSU 5
Bemidji State recorded the first run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning with a single from Beau Thoma. Answering back in the top of the fourth inning, Winona State tied it up at one run apiece with a single from Gullickson. Taking back the lead in their next at-bats, the Beavers recorded one run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jack Feldman hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Matt Filippi to cross home plate. The Warriors tied the score at two runs apiece in their next at-bats in the top of the fifth inning with a double from
Cole Fuecker. In the top of the sixth inning, BSU recorded two runs with singles from Feldman and Ben Corradi. Answering back in the top of the eighth inning, WSU took a two-run lead with an error from the pitcher, allowing Berreth to cross home plate, a ball that went by the catcher, allowing Ondell to score, and a single from Yu. Bemidji State was able to bring the lead within one in the bottom of the eighth on a ball that went by the catcher, allowing Koscielniak to score. In the final at-bat of the contest, Winona State catcher Flis threw out the runner trying to steal second base to seal a 6-5 victory.
Individual Leaders:
- In game one, R. Wall, Berreth, and Yu led the Warriors in batting average on balls in play with 1.000. Berreth and Dylan Harer led WSU in total bases with four. Berreth led Winona State in quality at-bats with four. Pierce Gritzmaker led the Warriors on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings and recording six strikeouts.
- In game two, Yu and Gullickson led WSU in batting average on balls in play with 1.000. Fuecker and Gullickson led Winona State in total base hits with two. Ondell led the Warriors in quality at-bats with four. Easton Arendt led WSU on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings and recording one strikeout.
