SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State baseball team drops both contests in a doubleheader against Augustana University.
In the top of the seventh inning of the first contest, the Warriors had one last chance to cut into a 9-1 deficit but were unable to cross home plate giving the Vikings the victory. Winona State brought the score within one run in the top of the eighth inning of the second contest. Augustana took one run back in the bottom of the eighth and held the Warriors scoreless in their final at-bats of the contest taking home the 7-5 victory.
Game 1 | WSU 1, AUGIE 9
Ryland Wall got Winona State on the board first with a single through the right side in the top of the second inning. Answering back and taking the lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings recorded five runs with singles from Ragan Pinnow, Sam Siegel, and Trevor Winterstein. Adding more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth , Augustana recorded four runs with a solo home run from Pinnow, a double from Ryan Clementi, a walk allowing Jason Axelberg to score, and a single from Jack Hines. Winona State was unable to answer back in their final at-bats of the contest giving the Vikings the 9-1 victory.
Game 2 | WSU 5, AUGIE 7
Augustana got on the board first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a triple from Carter Heinsch and Siegel being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Adding four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings scored off a throwing error and singles from Heinsch and Hines. The Warriors got on the board in the top of the sixth off a throwing error that allowed
Jack Funke to cross home plate and a single from
Jess Ondell. Winona State brought the score to within one run in the top of the eighth when
Klayton Hawkins scored off a wild pitch and
Cole Fuecker singled. In the bottom of the eighth, the Vikings added one run to their lead with a sacrifice bunt from Joe Kolbeck allowing Siegel to score. With Winona State being unable to answer back in the final at-bats of the contest, Augustana took home the 7-5 victory.
Individual Leaders:
- In game one, Adam Wall, R. Wall, and Ben Hefel lead the Warriors in hits each with one. R Wall led the team in RBIs with one. Pierce Gritzmaker led Winona State on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings and recording one strikeout.
- In game two, Cole Fuecker led the Warriors in hits with two and stolen bases with one. Ondell and Fuecker led the team in RBIs with one each. Easton Arendt led Winona State on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings and recording three strikeouts.
