WSU BASEBALL SPLITS TWIN BILL AGAINST MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team split today's twin bill at Minnesota Crookston, winning game one 8-6 and dropping the second game 10-3.
 
After today's games, Winona State holds a 15-14 record overall and sits in fifth within the NSIC with an 11-9 conference record.
 
Game One: WSU (8) – UMC (6)
Winona State trailed early as the Golden Eagles hit a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the first. Ben Hefel answered right back in the second inning, knocking a shot out of the park for a two-run homer to tie things up. The Warriors plated four in the fourth, aided by an Alex Berreth solo shot and a Hefel double to jump out to a 6-2 lead.
 
UMC scored one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to bring it within one run. The Warriors added two unearned runs in the sixth and held on to the lead to earn an 8-6 victory in game one on the day. Max Strecker picked up the win and Cole Stanchina earned the save for WSU.
 
Game Two: UMC (10) – WSU (3)
Minnesota Crookston jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring five in the second inning. Winona State got back into the ballgame after scoring one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but UMC scored three in the bottom of the sixth to shut down the Warrior rally. WSU was unable to muster any runs the rest of the game and the Golden Eagles held on for the 10-3 win.
 
Boyd Skelley took the loss for Winona State in game two while Cole Fuecker led the Warriors with three hits.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Josh Hatano went 3-3 with an RBI and a run in game one. Adam Wall and Ben Hefel also added multi-hit games.
  • Cole Fuecker collected three hits in game two, while Alex Berreth and Adam Wall each grabbed two hits.
  • Wesley Johnson started game one, going 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs to pick up the no decision for WSU.
  • Brian Wrenn pitched 2.2 solid innings in relief during game two, striking out three batters and allowing no runs.
 
Winona State will be in action next when they host Minnesota State on Wednesday, April 9 at 1:30pm at Loughrey Field in Winona, Minn.
