SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Winona State University volleyball team traveled west for the Seaside Invitational, hosted by Point Loma University.
The Warriors opened the event with a 3-1 loss versus Colorado Christian University before losing to No. 11 Point Loma 3-1. WSU dropped the final match of the event 3-1 to Dallas Baptist University.
CCU (3) - WSU (1)
In the opening set, CCU strung together an 11-0 run to take control of the set and run away with a 25-15 first set victory. The Warriors hung on early in the second set, but another large run set up CCU to take a 2-0 lead after a 25-20 set win.
Winona State bounced back in the third set, jumping out to an early lead and picking up a dominating 25-12 win to force a fourth. Colorado Christian was in control the whole way in the fourth set and won 25-11 to take the match 3-1.
Abby Ongna led the Warriors with 14 kills while
Hailee Peters dished out 21 assists and 10 digs.
PLNU (3) – WSU (1)
In a matchup with their first ranked opponent of the season, Winona State took No. 11 Point Loma to four sets but the Warriors were unable to pull off the upset. Point Loma took control midway through the first set and held on for a 25-22 victory.
The Warriors flipped the script in set two, taking a commanding lead, only to see PLNU go on a big run to tie the set up at 24 apiece.
Zoe Haan and
Quinn Robak connected on a pair of swings to take the set's final two points and tie the match up at 1-1. Point Loma closed out the match after a pair of victories in the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-13.
Ongna and Haan led WSU with 12 kills each as Peters and
Ashlyn Steding tallied double-digit assists.
Lily Shields tallied 11 digs to pace Winona State.
DBU (3) – WSU (1)
In the final match at the Seaside Invitational, Winona State fell behind early in the first set before forcing extra points. After being tied at 26-26, Dallas Baptist tallied the final two points of the first set to take the 28-26 set win. DBU road the momentum in the second set to pull away in the middle of the set and take a 2-0 lead after a 25-17 victory.
In a must-win fourth set, Winona State was able to secure a 25-23 win after it was tied 23-23. Dallas Baptist won the fourth set convincingly, 25-15, to take the 3-1 match victory.
Ongna led WSU with 13 kills on a .435 hitting percentage while Haan added a dozen kills as well. Peters dished out 36 assists and
Katie Bleeker led the Warriors with 15 digs.
Winona State (1-5) opens NSIC play next weekend, hosting Sioux Falls at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11th and SMSU on Saturday, September 12th at 4:00 p.m.
