WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State track and field team had a remarkable day as six Warriors provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship and 10 Warriors cracked into the top 10 in school history in their respective events Saturday at the Saint Mary's Early Birdinal in Winona.
Freshman Amanda Schaefer made a major impact in just her second meet as a Warrior by recording a 5'5 1/4" (1.66 meters) in the high jump, which not only provisionally qualified her for the championship, but placed her second all-time in Winona State history in the event.
Schaefer wasn't the only freshman that left a mark in the Warrior record books. Kaitlyn Long recorded a provisionally qualifying weight throw of 61' 11" (18.87 meters), which is the third best throw in WSU history. Junior Abbey Ristow and Senior Alissa Rausch also recorded provisional qualifying marks while finishing second and third in the weight throw. Ristow recorded a 56' 3" (17.14 meters), throw, breaking her into ninth in the Winona State record book and Rausch recorded a 56' 2 1/2" (17.13 meters), good for the 10th best in WSU history.
Rausch also record a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put, taking first place in the meet with a throw of 44' 9 1/2" (13.65 meters), as well as recording sixth in the Winona State record book. Delaney Miller also took third place in the event with 42' 5 1/2".
Senior Hannah Mueller was the sixth Warrior to score a provisional qualifying mark. Her mark in the long jump, 18' 5 3/4" (5.63 meters) also placed her fourth in the Winona State record book in the long jump.
Sophomore Hailey Deschaine placed third in the 55-meter dash, but also recorded the eighth-best finish in that event in Warrior history by crossing the finish line in 7.42 seconds.
The Warriors also did some damage in the distance runs.
Katie Bagley won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.56, cracking her into eighth in the Winona State record book. The Warriors as a team took the top six spots in that event, with McKenzie Carper and Madison Schroeder coming in second and third.
Jordan Skelly had a strong finish in her first meet coming off of the cross country season by recording the eighth-best run in Winona State history in the one-mile run with a time of 5:19.44 and Chelsea Schrubbe's second place finish of 5:19.97 had her placing ninth in the Warrior record book.
Taylor Weis rounded out the Warriors cracking into the record books by crossing the finish line in 8.75 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, placing her in a tie for seventh in WSU history in that event.
The next event for the Winona State track and field team will be at the Minnesota State Open and Multi on Friday and Saturday in Mankato.
