WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State soccer team used two first half goals to earn a 2-1 victory over Northern State on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Warriors struck first in just the fifth minute when a free kick from 45 yards out by Kelsey Foss eventually found the head of Abby Bohanski who snuck it inside the left post for her team-leading seventh goal of the season to give the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage.
WSU added an insurance goal that would prove to be the game winner 13 minutes later on a pretty play where Hannah Burt passed it to Bohanski in the middle of the field who then found Kati Baker on the left side, who quickly fired a shot on goal that bounced off the right post and into the net. The goal was the senior's third of the season and 12th of her career to put the Warriors up 2-0.
The Wolves cut the deficit in half in the 37th minute when a free kick from Sydney Shintaffer got through a host of players at the net – including WSU goalkeeper Rachel Oleson – and the result was an easy tap in goal for Anna Bondy to bring it to a 2-1 score.
The goal would turn out to be the last of the game, as Northern State was held without a shot on goal for the final 45 minutes in a chippy second half in which there were 10 of the game's 16 fouls.
The Warriors posted 21 shots in the game, compared to seven for the Wolves. Eight of WSU's shots were on goal, while NSU managed three.
Mehan Bolton and Meg Riebau each finished with a game-high four shots, with two of Bolton's shots landing on goal. Nicole Sames put two of her three shots on goal, while Baker also had a pair of shots on goal.
Oleson made just two saves to earn her ninth win of the season.
Winona State (9-3, 6-3 NSIC) hits the road next weekend to take on Sioux Falls on Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon matchup with Southwest Minnesota State.
