WINONA, Minn. – The No. 25 Winona State volleyball team used its best hitting performance of the season to sweep visiting Upper Iowa 3-0 Tuesday night in front of 433 fans in McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors avenged an earlier loss to the Peacocks by hitting a season-high .418 for the match while holding the Peacocks to just .155. The Warriors also held a distinct advantage at the net, recording eight blocks while Upper Iowa did not have one.
Lauren Kudronowicz assembled another terrific performance, hitting a blistering .636 with a match-high 15 kills to lead the Warrior charge.
A pair of kills from Danielle Rampart and Jordan Runge helped the Warriors build an 8-3 lead in the opening set and the Peacocks would not get closer than three. The Warriors finished off UIU with a 7-2 run to claim the opener 25-17. WSU hit .343 in the first set and the Peacocks managed just .167.
The Warriors took advantage of four straight Upper Iowa miscues in set two to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead and cruised to a 25-15 victory. WSU hit .519 in the set – its highest percentage of the match – while holding the Peacocks to .138 – its lowest.
The Peacocks gave WSU its toughest test of the match in the third and final set, despite outhitting UIU by a wide margin yet again at .417-.156. The Peacocks used three straight points to build a 12-8 lead – its largest of the match – and still held a 17-14 advantage, but the Warriors went on a key 8-1 spurt to move back in front 22-18 and didn't look back as back-to-back Rampart kills finished off the Peacocks with a 25-20 win.
Rampart recorded her fifth double-double in the past six matches with an 11-dig, 14-dig effort while hitting .360.
McKenna Larsen was very efficient, scoring on eight of her 12 kill attempts with just two errors to hit .500 for the match along with a match-high 37 assists.
Maria Fruechte added nine kills and hit .300, while Jamie Cairncross had a match-high 17 digs.
Winona State (12-7, 6-6 NSIC) continues its homestand this weekend when it welcomes Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State to McCown Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday.
