LAST WEEK: Three Warriors scored first career touchdowns as WSU beat Wayne State 45-31 last Saturday in Winona to move above .500 for the season.
KICKOFF FORECAST: Weather in Winona Saturday is forecast to be a crisp, sunny fall afternoon with temperatures in the mid 40s and kickoff with no threat of rain.Â
THE HISTORY: The Vikings and Warriors will be meeting for the 10th time dating back to 1973, a game that went the Vikings' way by a 48-3 score. Augie also won the most recent matchup, a 33-8 victory last season in Sioux Falls.Â
LAST TIME VS. THE VIKINGS: The Warriors mustered just 220 yards of total offense while Augie racked up 473 in a 33-8 defeat last season in Sioux Falls. WSU's lone score came on a 13-yard fourth quarter touchdown pass from
Jack Nelson to
Cameron Johnson to cut the lead to 24-8.
LAST TIME IN WINONA: The Warriors and Vikings met in Winona in the second to last game of the season in 2013 as well, with the Warriors emerging victorious by a 28-24 score.
Jack Nelson fired a 7-yard touchdown pass to
Alex Jensen with 6:32 to play for the game-winning score. WSU got the job done without much help through the air, with Nelson completing just 12 passes for 141 yards with two touchdowns.
A LOOK AT THE VIKINGS: The Vikings are coached by Jerry Olszewski, who's in his third season as head coach at Augustana and has a 17-14 record at Augie and a 49-32 career record after a previous five-year stint at St. Olaf College. The Vikings bring a 7-2 record into Winona, suffering a 35-34 week three setback at MSU Moorhead and a 35-27 loss at then-No. 1 Minnesota State. Â The Vikings are ranked No. 7 in this week's Central Region Rankings. Â Augie has the league's third-best scoring offense, averaging 39.1 points per game, while WSU is eighth at 30.3. Augie ranks eighth in scoring defense, allowing 24.2 points per game, while WSU is 10th at 27.6. The Warriors should look to exploit an Augie pass defense that is the worst in the league, as the Vikings give up 281.1 points per game, while WSU has the No. 1 passing attack in the NSIC, averaging 319.8.
PROLIFIC PASSERS: Two of the league's top passers will square off Saturday in WSU's
Jack Nelson and Augie's Trey Heid. Nelson leads the NSIC with 313.9 yards per game with 22 touchdown passes while Heid is third in the NSIC with 282.2 yards per game while throwing 21 touchdowns. In terms of total offense, Heid is second at 316.0 yards while Nelson is third at 310.1.
PASSING RECORD AT STAKE: Jack Nelson has his sights set on one more significant record: WSU's single-season passing record. The junior quarterback needs just 180 yards to break WSU's single-season passing record currently held by Drew Aber with 3,004 yards in the 2007 season.
MURRAY TAKES OVER: Senior LB
Ian Murray stepped last week in place of Â
Collin Corcoran, who was injured mid-game. Murray filled his shoes flawlessly, racking up a game-high and career-high 14 tackles, ten of which were solo stops.
