No. 24 Warriors Shake Off Tough Start, Beat Sioux Falls 3-1

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 24 Winona State volleyball team rebounded from a first set loss to win the next three in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-13, 25-17, 25-20) win over Sioux Falls Saturday.

Maria Wrage turned in one of the most efficient hitting performances a Warrior has had, hitting a blistering .750, getting kills on 12 of her 16 attempts with no errors. The percentage ranks as a tie for the fifth-best percentage in single-match history with a minimum of 10 attempts.

Maria Fruechte added her second double-double of the season, tying match-highs with 17 kills and 16 digs while hitting a strong .406. Taylor Goar also had 17 kills while hitting .234 with seven digs.

The Warriors had a 16-6 lead in the first set after back-to-back kills from Taylor Goar, but an 8-2 USF run cut the lead to 18-14. Maria Fruechte got WSU's lead back up to seven points at 21-14 and WSU had three match points at 24-20, but Sioux Falls survived and eventually won the set 26-24. The Warriors hit just .135 in the opening set while USF hit .178.

It was all Warriors from then on, as WSU hit .393 compared to .000 from the Cougars as WSU cruised to a 25-13 win thanks to eight straight points and a quick 9-1 lead. The Warriors would extend their lead to 14-2 on a kill from Kudronowicz and Larsen later made the score 22-6 before Maria Wrage finished it off with a kill for the 25-13 win.

The Warriors got off to another quick 8-3 start in the third set and Fruechte later made it 18-9 before Goar finished off the set with the 25-17 win.

The fourth and final set was more closely contested as USF had an early 9-8 lead, but WSU countered with three straight points and never trailed again, claiming the 25-20 win.

WSU rebounded nicely from its slow first set to hit .308 for the match, while Sioux Falls managed to hit .159.

Winona State (16-9, 10-8 NSIC) closes out the regular season next weekend, hosting a pair of ranked opponents in Augustana and Wayne State on Friday and Saturday in McCown Gym.
