Warrior Tennis Sweeps UMD, SCSU With 6-3 Wins Saturday

SARTELL, Minn. – The Winona State tennis team turned in solid performances in its first road trip of the season, earning a pair of 6-3 victories over Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State Saturday in Sartell, Minn.

The No. 1 doubles team of Aimee Basinski and Brianna Havelka continued their hot start to the season, improving to a spotless 7-0 record on the season with a pair of wins. The duo defeated the Bulldogs by an 8-2 score before downing the Huskies 8-4.

WSU was strong in doubles play as a whole, winning five of six matches on the day. The Warriors swept doubles against Duluth, with the No. 2 team of Leah Dahl and Justine Daane claiming an 8-5 win while the No. 3 team of Katie Scruggs and Ellyn Grossen were victorious with an 8-4 score. Dahl and Danne also were winners against the Huskies, cruising to an 8-1 win.

Havelka led the Warriors with a perfect 4-0 record on the day with a strong effort in No. 2 singles play as well. She earned a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over UMD while posting a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-1, 10-2 win against St. Cloud State.

Against the Bulldogs, Basinski earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Grossen claimed a 7-5, 0-6, 10-7 win at No. 5 singles. The Warriors earned victories at the top four singles spots against St. Cloud State, with Basinski winning 6-3, 7-5, Daane winning 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 and Dahl earning a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 win.

Winona State (5-2, 5-1 NSIC) returns to action Sunday for the first of four nonconference matchups in a three-day span in Florida.
