WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State gymnastics team started strong but fell to Wisconsin-La Crosse 186.00-184.825 Thursday night in the Warriors' home finale in McCown Gymnasium.
Junior Jade Donaldson paced the Warriors, claiming titles in both the All-Around (36.700) and the Vault (9.375).
WSU posted strong scores on the vault and bars to hold a 93.425-91.750 lead after two rotations. But the Eagles made up the difference on the beam, posting a meet-high score of 47.450 while the Warriors struggled with a 44.875.
Winona State excelled on the uneven bars, posting the second-best team score in program history with a 47.075, with the top mark of 47.400 also set this year in WSU's second meet of the season at Alaska Anchorage. Freshman Kathryn Pipp led the way on the event with a 9.525 – WSU's top score of the night. Senior Danielle Thenell posted a 9.500 in her final home meet, while Olivia Cattelino added a 9.475 while Katie Carling finished with a 9.375 and Jade Donaldson added a 9.200.
Along with Donaldson's first place finish on the vault, Veronica Peterson and Taylor Lewis each recorded scores of 9.300 as part of a four-way tie for second place in the event. Brooke Hiestand added a 9.200 and Emily Goldeman finished with a 9.175.
Hiestand finished second on the floor exercise with a 9.450, while Peterson added a 9.350 and Donaldson scored a 9.325 along with a 9.300 from Pipp.
Katie Carling led WSU on the beam, finishing with a 9.300 while Hiestand added a 9.125.
Winona State now makes its preparations for the WIAC Championship and regional meet, hosted by Hamline on Sunday, March 15 in St. Paul, Minn.
