Warriors Earn Pair of 3-0 Sweeps Over Pittsburg State, McKendree

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Winona State volleyball team captured a pair of 3-0 sweeps Friday, beating Pittsburg State and McKendree at the Rockhurst Volleyball Classic in Kansas City.

The Warriors had little trouble making quick work of the Gorillas in the opener. The Warriors struggled early on, hitting just .114 as a team in the first set compared to .176 from Pitt State, but with the match knotted at 23 apiece, the Warriors were able to get a pair of big points on a kill from Maria Fruechte and an ace from Danielle Rampart to win set one.

It was all Warriors from that point forward. The Warriors hit .455 in the second set and used a late surge to claim a 25-15 win. Clinging to a 17-14 lead, Michelle Polland had a kill that sparked an 8-1 run to close out the set.

Winona State heated up even more in the third and final set, hitting .640 as a team with 17 kills to just one error while holding the Gorillas to -.037 hitting with just four kills and five errors to roll to a 25-8 victory.

Rampart hit a fantastic .524 for the match with 12 kills and just one error. Fruechte also tallied 12 kills, while Lauren Kudronowicz add 10 kills while hitting a strong .474.

McKenna Larsen led all players with 30 assists, while Jamie Cairncross added 11 digs, the only player in double figures from either team.

The Warriors found themselves in a tight matchup in the night game, but again got the big points when they needed them to earn a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 victory. The Warriors hit .222 for the match while holding McKendree to .155.

No Warrior reached double digit kills, as Rampart and Taylor Goar each had eight. Larsen recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs while hitting .545, and Cairncross led all players with 14 digs.

Winona State (4-1) continues play Saturday when it takes on Christian Brothers at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. meeting with Henderson State.
