WSU Tennis Beats SMSU 6-3, Falls To MSU 9-0 In Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend, earning a 6-3 win over Southwest Minnesota State Saturday before falling to Minnesota State 9-0 Sunday afternoon at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.

Against SMSU, the Warriors earned victories at four out of the six singles spots and took two of three doubles matches. Justine Daane earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, Rachel Gantz won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Hattie Scott took the No. 3 singles match 6-2, 6-3, while Katie Henning earned a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 win in a tiebreak.

In doubles competition, Gantz and Daane won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Lauren Willkom and Melissa Boehmke earned an 8-3 victory.

The Warriors turned in good efforts at the top of its singles lineup against the Mavericks as well, with Daane falling in a tiebreak to Melissa Mashburn. Daane took the first set 7-6 (7-2), but dropped the second set 6-3 and the tiebreak 10-6. Gantz fell to Erin Streeter 6-4, 6-4.

Winona State (2-3) hosts Minnesota Duluth Friday at 6 p.m. and St. Cloud State Saturday at 4 p.m. at Winona Tennis Center.
