Winona State streaks into North Dakota road trip

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University embarks on its longest road trip of the season riding a five-game winning streak. The Warriors take on UMary on Friday at 4 p.m. and conclude the trip on Sunday at Minot with a 12 p.m. kickoff.

Both weekend opponents are currently looking up at Winona State in the NSIC standings with four games left in the regular season. Entering the final three weeks of the season, WSU is currently fourth in the conference standings and in position to host a first round playoff game.

The Warriors' will look to make a statement on Sunday at Minot with the Beavers currently ranked No. 10 in the first NCAA Central Region rankings that were released on Wednesday.

Winona State's five-game winning streak is its longest since 2015. The Warriors' longest streak before that came in 2014 with eight straight wins.

Senior Abby Bohanski (offense) and freshman Yanel Ortiz (goalkeeper) are the reigning NSIC Players of the Week at their respective positions. Bohanski netted the game-winning goal in each of Winona's 1-0 victories last weekend. The forward now ranks fourth all-time in program history in game-winning goals (12), is tied for ninth in career goals (30) and ranks 11th all-time in total points (76).

Ortiz has made three consecutive starts in net for the Warriors and posted a shutout victory in each appearance. She has recorded 16 saves in those contests, including a career-best 11 in a pivotal game against Duluth last Friday.

During their five-game streak, the Warriors have netted 10 goals while allowing just one. Winona State ranks third in the NSIC in shots on goal/game (9.17) and is fifth in the league in total goals allowed (13).

Bohanski and Melissa Greco share with team lead in points (7) with three goals and one assist each. Alyssa Reynolds, Georgette Topalis and Courtney Wiencek have each registered four points this season. Topalis and Wiencek have two goals apiece, while Reynolds has a team-best two assists.

Junior Bridget Doran leads the team with 1,088 minutes played. She has started all 12 games and played the entire duration on defense 11 times this year, including nine straight games.

Following this weekend's trip the Warriors will travel to Southwest Minnesota State next Friday before hosting Sioux Falls in the regular season finale on Sunday, October 28.

Scouting UMary

The Marauders (5-6-2, 4-5-2 NSIC) have also won back-to-back 1-0 decisions. Those two wins snapped UMary's streak of four straight without a win. The Marauders are currently on the outside looking in on the playoff picture, entering the weekend in ninth place in the NSIC.

UMary has netted just 15 goals in its 13 games this season while allowing 17. The Marauders have posted five shutouts on the year.

Caylin Cathey leads the team in points (14) and goals (6) while adding two assists. Megan Lowery has a team-high 24 shots and Lisa Swardh has a team-best 14 shots on goal. Those two players have combined for four goals.

Madisyn Waltman is the Marauders' starting keeper and is responsible for UMary's five shutouts. Waltman has allowed 14 goals over 12 starts while gloving 45 saves for a .763 save percentage.

Scouting Minot State

The Beavers (7-4-3, 5-4-2 NSIC) will host Upper Iowa on Friday before welcoming the Warriors to town. Minot has won two of its last three games, including a 1-1 tie in that span.

The Beavers own one of the most explosive offenses in the league with 26 goals on the year. Minot has made the most of its chances as the Beavers rank only seventh in the NSIC in shots on goal/game (6.71).

Sofia Lewis is second in the league in goals (10) and ranks third in total points (25). Teammate Haley Berryman is ninth in the NSIC in points (15) with six goals and three assists. Outside of those two players, no other Beaver has more than two goals this season.

Goalie Erin Rafferty has allowed just 13 goals over 14 starts while recording three shutouts. The Beaver defense has aided Rafferty as the keeper has faced 129 shots and been forced to make just 39 saves.
