GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Winona State University opened the conference portion of its 2017-18 schedule over the weekend with a pair of wins. The Warriors swept Minnesota Crookston, 9-0, on Saturday before picking up a 6-3 win over Bemidji State on Sunday.
Tayla Card, Rachel Gantz, Kali Hackmann and Kendra Kappes each went undefeated in their four respective doubles and singles matches over the weekend.
Justine Daane and Kaisey Skibba earned an 8-1 win over Crookston at doubles #1. Kappes and Gantz also picked up an 8-1 victory at doubles #2, while Hackmann and Card were 8-0 winners at doubles #3.
In singles action, Gantz (singles #2), Kappes (#4) and Hackmann (#6) each registered 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Skiba earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at singles #1, and Daane was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at singles #3.
The Warrior got off to a 2-1 match lead over Bemidji State thanks to doubles wins by Kappes/Gantz and Hackmann/Card. Kappes and Gantz swept their doubles #2 opponents, 8-0, and Hackman and Card earned an 8-3 win at doubles #3.
Winona wasted little time ensuring the overall win based on order of finish in singles play, winning the first three matches to seal their triumph.
Singles #5 finished first with Card earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Kappes then earned a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-8 win at singles #4. Hackmann put the finishing touches on the Beavers with a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win at singles #5.
After dropping a 6-1 decision at singles #2 to open play, Gantz rallied for 6-3 and 10-6 wins to also claim a victory.
The Warriors return to the courts next weekend in Owatonna, Minnesota for two more conference matches. Winona takes on Southwest Minnesota State Saturday and faces Mankato on Sunday.
