ORLANDO, Fla. – Winona State University battled back from an 0-2 deficit on Monday afternoon to prevail with a 5-4 victory over the University of the Sciences. The Warriors (8-0) remained undefeated with their comeback triumph.
Beginning with singles play against the Devils, Tayla Card's 6-1, 6-1 win at singles #6 put Winona State on the board and cut the early deficit in half. Justine Daane followed with a clutch 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win at singles #3 to even up the team score.
Kali Hackmann also needed three sets, but outlasted her opponent at singles #4 with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 victory. The senior improved to 8-0 in singles play this spring. Kendra Kappes suffered her first solo loss this season, a close affair at singles #4, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 11-9.
Hackmann and Card teamed up for a flawless 8-0 win at doubles #3 to put the Warriors back on top overall, 4-3, but the Devils won at doubles #1 to set up the decisive match.
Kappes found redemption alongside teammate Rachel Gantz for an 8-4 victory at doubles #2 to secure the Warrior team win.
Winona State will enjoy an off day on Tuesday before concluding the Florida road trip with a pair of matches on Wednesday.
