Warriors suffer first loss, bounce back for win in road trip finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – Following a 5-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon, Winona State University tennis rebounded with a 6-3 win over Eckerd College to close its spring break trip on a positive note. The Warriors (9-1) were handed their fist defeat of the season by Christian Brothers University.

In the team loss to begin the day, Kali Hackmann and Tayla Card each earned singles victories, and teamed up for an 8-2 win at doubles #3.

Rachel Gantz lost a competitive match at singles #2 by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 10-7. The senior was then locked in another back-and-forth match against her opponent from Eckerd in the nightcap, this time prevailing with a 1-6, 7-6 (10-0), 10-7 win. Gantz's victory set the tone as the Warriors won five of six singles matches against Eckerd.

Justine Daane battled back for a 0-6, 6-0, 10-6 triumph at singles #3. Kendra Kappes was a 6-1, 6-0 winners at singles #4. Hackmann remained undefeated in singles play this season with a 6-2, 6-1 win, and Card added a 6-1, 6-1 victory of her own.

Hackmann and Card scored the Warriors' lone win in doubles action, 8-2, to cap their big day.

Winona State returns home to resume conference play next weekend with a home match against Upper Iowa University. First serve is slated for 3:30 pm. On Saturday, March 17 in Winona.
