MINNETONKA, Min. – Winona State University made quick work of Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday morning in the opening match of the NSIC Tournament. The Warriors swept the Mavericks, 5-0, to advance to the semifinals of the postseason tournament.
Kaisey Skibba and Justine Daane at doubles No. 1 and Tayla Card and Kali Hackmann at doubles No. 3 were each 8-5 winners. Winona's No. 2 team of Kendra Kappes and Rachel Gantz completed the sweep with an 8-3 triumph.
The Warriors would need just two matches in singles competition to seal the team victory and punch WSU's ticket to the conference semifinals. Hackmann was the first to finish at singles No. 5 with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Kappes proceeded to end the Mavericks postseason run with a 6-0, 6-2 win at singles No. 4.
Hackmann improves to 15-1 on the year in singles competition while Kappes moves to 13-3. The team of Hackmann and Card lifted their record to 11-1 in doubles competition.
The Warriors ahead the winner of another quarterfinals match between MSU-Moorhead and Sioux Falls later this morning. Winona State already holds wins over each team during the regular season. The Warriors' semifinals match is scheduled for Sunday at 8 a.m.
The NSIC Championship match is slated for Sunday at noon.
