WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University got off to a good start in its final home weekend of the season with a 7-2 win over the University of Mary at the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors (12-2, 9-1 NSIC) won two of three doubles matches and took five of six in singles play from the Marauders (5-9, 3-7 NSIC).
Kendra Kappes and Rachel Gantz were the first to finish at double No. 2 with an 8-2 victory. Tayla Card and Kali Hackmann improved to 9-1 as a team at doubles No. 3 with an 8-2 triumph as well. Winona's No. 1 team of Kaisey Skibba and Justine Daane went down to the wire before ultimately falling in their match, 9-7.
In singles action, Card (No. 6) and Hackmann (No. 5) each earned 6-1, 6-1 victories to lift their respective season records to 13-1.
Gantz was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at singles No. 2, and Daane earned a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3. Kappes sealed the Warriors' team victory with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 4.
Winona State wraps up its home slate on Sunday afternoon with a pivotal match for seeding in the upcoming conference postseason tournament against MSU Moorhead. The Warriors and Dragons entered the weekend tied for second in the NSIC standings. First serve between the teams is slated for 12 p.m. in Winona.
