Box Score WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University tennis team snapped a brief two-match skid Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center as the Warriors took on Upper Iowa University in their first conference matchup in three weeks and produced a 5-2 victory.
WSU improves to 7-7 (6-3 NSIC) with the win while UIU falls to 2-8 (1-7 NSIC).
The Warriors swept the Peacocks in doubles play to set the tone for a dominant day on the court. No. 1 Beth Murman and Kaisey Skibba picked up a 6-3 win and No. 2 Kendra Kappes and Tayla Card blanked their opponents for a 6-0 triumph. The Peacocks forfeited at doubles No. 3, but WSU had already secured the team point.
The team of Murman and Skibba improved to 10-4 this season while Card and Kappes returned to the .500 mark at 7-7.
In singles action, the Warriors won at No. 3, 4, 5, and earned another forfeit victory at 6. No. 3 Skibba (6-0, 6-1) and No. 4 Card (6-1, 6-1) capped their perfect day with wins. No. 5 Faith Young added a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. Young, a freshman, produced the most decisive win.
Card improved to 9-5 with her third straight singles win and Skibba ran her record to 8-6.
The Warriors will wrap up regular season play next weekend at home against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 against Bemidji.
