Warrior ReWind

Winona, Minn.- While most of the NCAA sports world is on pause, fans and followers of Winona State Athletics can still stay connected to their favorite teams with the Warrior ReWind series.

Warrior ReWind stories seek to highlight notable performances by WSU teams, student-athletes, and coaches throughout the course of the proud history of Winona State Athletics. Stay tuned over the next several weeks, as we revisit Warrior points of pride from competitions involving all 14 WSU varsity athletic programs.

With his 8-inning, one-hit performance against Tiffin University on March 5 in Leesburg, Florida, Winona State Warrior starting pitcher Aaron Mutter moved to 3-0 on the 2020 season and pushed his career win total to 14.  Some key relief help by Caleb Schoenholz, preserved the 9-3 victory over the Dragons and was the last win before the CoVID-19 pandemic ended all NCAA baseball seasons abruptly.  For more on the Warriors final win of 2020, go to this link.

Winona State pitching has seen more than it's share of success on the Warrior mound, with a storied WSU baseball tradition dating back to 1919.

Read on for a deep dive into the Winona State Baseball pitching past, with some notable mile-markers along the way in Warrior hurlers' history.

Warrior Pitching Over the Years...

You Can't Touch This: No-Hitters (21):

- 21 total no-hitters. WSU has notched at least one no-hitter in each of the following decades; 1940's (1), 1950's (3), 1960's (2), 1970's (6), 1980's (3), 1990's (4), 2000's (2).

- First No-Hitter: Andy Sweta, April, 14 1949.  Sweta had an 11-1 nine-inning victory over Westminster (MO) College.

- Most Recent No-Hitter: Brandon Hellenbrand, May 7, 2005, in a 10-0 shutout win over the University of Minnesota-Crookston.

Plays Well with Others: Shared No-Hitters (2):

- Lee Paul & Jerry Grefbin combined for a 5-0 effort against Southwestern (TX) College on April 3, 1952.

- Steve Kriknke & Dave Anderson combined for a 1-0 win over Carleton College on April 11, 1972.

Stands Alone: Perfect Game, plus:

- Lee Boettcher threw the only recorded perfect game in Winona State history, a 2-0 gem over Concordia-St. Paul on May 17, 1972.  Boettcher is also the only WSU hurler with multiple no-hitters, throwing two between 1970 and 1973.  He had six shutouts in his three-year career, in which he made 42 appearances for the Warriors.

Notable:

- Bemidji State has been the victim of the most dialed-in Warrior pitching performances, accounting for four of Winona State's 22 no-hitters.

- Minnesota-Morris was no-hit by Winona State twice in the same season; Chris Gove beat the Cougars 2-0 on March 27, 1994, while teammate Curry Deutsch tossed an 11-0 win against UM-M five weeks later on May 3.

- Warrior pitchers seem to particularly prefer April 14. Two Winona State no-hitters have been achieved on the day before taxes are due; the first-ever Winona no-hitter by Andy Sweta occurred on April 14, 1949, while Troy Heifort closed out the WSU baseball century with a no-hitter on April 14, 2000.

Extra-Innings of Interest:

- Most Complete Games Career:  Matt Hoppenstedt had 23 solo outings between 1995-97.
