Winona, Minn - Loughrey Field, long-time home to Winona State baseball, recently received a facelift to the playing surface.
Spring baseball in Minnesota had taken a toll on the Loughrey infield surface over recent years. A congested schedule of Warrior baseball in the spring and fall, as well as community team usage during the summer had proved to be a calendar challenge for improvement. With the recent lull in college and community sports activity, the summer of 2020 provided the window of time needed for tackling the project.
Crews from local contractor Winona Nursery completely removed the former infield grass and employed laser-sighting grading equipment to re-engineer the subsurface. New sod was installed over the course of the week, and with irrigation systems in order and some warm temperatures, the Warrior infield has taken a new look.
The Loughrey Field upgrade is one of several projects occurring on campus this summer. Recently, Maxwell Field received a new FieldTurf Classic HD surface and will provide Warrior football and soccer a state-of-the-art field for practice and competition this fall.
